History of the White House B&B

Initially constructed in the 1820's for a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and whilst the town was then known as Newark, the first capital of Upper Canada, later the Province of Ontario and one of the first four signatories to the union of the Canadian colonies as Canada, under the auspices of the 1867 British North America Act with Quebec (Lower Canada)and the colonies of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

The home has had a succession of owners of prominence from both the Canadian and American sides of the Niagara River.

Prior to and after the American Civil War the home received many prominent members of the liberal American confederacy and Northern establishment, that till the War had been eminent participants in the federal pre-war politics of Washington including the last Vice-president under President Lincoln.

Today it is one of the longest continuously operated Bed and Breakfasts commencing with the ownership of the Howe family in the early 1980's and under the guidance and humour of Margherita and Norman Howe. The former a Member of the Order of Canada and of the Order of Ontario and the latter a decorated RAF Canadian Second World War pilot and aficionado of Hawker
Hurricanes and Typhoons, both of whom you will see about the grounds whilst now living nearby.

The home continues to be operated by members of the Howe family, who take delight in being able to present the home to those that have an interest in history, the way of the past and the splendour and light and space that our previous generations had some the good fortune to enjoy and to preserve.

One cannot understate the grace of the home nor its quiet and peace and its proximity for almost 200 years to the past and presence of all Niagara has and now does and will stand for.
